As I sit alone in my apartment I feel a sense of calmness. No noise, no worries, no tension. There is silence.... Well, except for my poor old heater that tries hard to keep me warm, albeit unsuccessfully. Having lived alone for some months now, I have come to love the silence. What's silence? Is it merely the absence of sound? Or something much more profound? Can there be anything as disquieting or as calming as silence? Ask different people and you will get different answers. Silence can be a raging storm or a peaceful serenade. It can be equally hurting and soothing.
What emotion does silence bring forth? Happiness or pain? How is it that silence can be equally beautiful and equally tormenting? How would you feel if you go to an empty room and sit alone? Very soon the silence will fill up your thoughts. The feelings you experience is merely a reflection of your state of mind. Ever slept alone in your room after watching a horror movie? Yeah, you got it... Anger, happiness, sadness, horror, to name but a few...

What would you say if I asked what silence means to you? Would you say silence is quietness? Or would you say there is a dis-quietness in this quietness? Isn't it amazing that it can mean different things at different times to the same person? If you are happy, silence gives you a calm feeling and makes you shout loud in joy. If unhappy, there can't be more a painful feeling and you cry out loud. For something that is nothing, it's powerful enough to reflect your deepest and hidden emotions; especially the ones concealed, clocked in the darkness. It seems paradoxical that silence reveals so much when it is meant to conceal. Haa... How can one forget.. Silence is a language on its own taking on different meaning in different situations.
